Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday.
This marks the second time in American history that a president will serve two non-consecutive terms. The last person to do this was Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd president (1885-1889) and 24th president (1893-1897).
Trump’s inauguration also represents a historical time for Montana politics.
This will be the first time in over a hundred years that the state has an all-Republican federal delegation with a Republican president.
The last time this occurred was in 1911, during Republican President Howard Taft’s administration. Congress was in its 61st congressional session, which went from March 4, 1909, to March 3, 1911.
For the first time since the 62nd congressional session, which started on April 4, 1911, a Democrat will not hold one of the Treasure State’s Senate seats.
Congress is currently in its 119th session.
In November 2024, Tim Sheehy defeated incumbent Senator Jon Tester to oust Democrats from electorally representing Montanans at the federal level.
Sheehy joins Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) as the two Montana senators.
“This November, Montanans made clear that they are ready to usher in a new era of American strength and prosperity under President Donald J. Trump and Republican control of both chambers,” Sheehy told The Montana Chronicles.
“Senator Steve Daines is a successful businessman and great American who I am thrilled to be working alongside to ensure the voices of Montanans are heard loudly and clearly back in Washington,” he added. “Each day, we will work to make life more affordable, safe, and prosperous for the people of Montana by restoring competence and common sense to our government.”
Daines told The Chronicles it is an “exciting time for Montana to have two Republican senators in D.C.”
“Senator Sheehy is a battle-tested conservative fighter who will represent our great state well. I’m looking forward to working with him to implement President Trump’s agenda as quickly as possible and hit the ground running on important issues like securing the border, cutting taxes, reining in reckless spending and strengthening our energy dominance,” he said.
The last time Montana had all Republican federal legislators, the senators were Thomas Carter and Joseph Dixon, and the representative was Charles Nelson Pray.
